The First 30 Days With a New Puppy: What Actually Matters

Forget the 50-item checklist. Here's the short version we give every new puppy family in Brazoria County.

Most adult dog problems we fix could've been prevented in the first month. Not with formal training, just with structure. Here's what actually moves the needle.

Crate as a default, not a punishment

Your puppy sleeps in the crate, eats meals near the crate, and naps in the crate during the day. This isn't cruel. It's how a dog learns to settle instead of demanding attention every minute they're awake.

Potty training is a schedule problem

Out after waking up, after eating, after playing, and every two hours otherwise. Praise the second they go outside. Don't punish accidents indoors, just clean it up and tighten the schedule.

Socialization that actually works

Expose your puppy to as many sights, sounds, and surfaces as possible before 16 weeks. That doesn't mean dog parks. It means controlled exposure to the things they'll see for the rest of their life: vacuums, kids, mail trucks, hardwood floors, hats.
